Chapter 1 – THE SCREAM AT THE STAIRS
The first thing Adrian heard when he opened the front door was his baby screaming.
The second thing he saw nearly stopped his heart.
Emma’s stroller lay sideways at the bottom of the staircase.
One wheel was still spinning.
“EMMA!”
Adrian dropped his briefcase and ran.
His ten-month-old daughter was crying so hard her tiny face had turned red. Clara, the family’s housekeeper and nanny, was sitting on the floor with Emma pressed against her chest.
Clara was shaking.
A few feet away, Vanessa stood against the wall, sobbing.
“Oh my God,” Vanessa cried. “Adrian!”
Adrian grabbed Emma from Clara.
“What happened?”
“Sir, I—”
Vanessa pointed a trembling finger.
“She pushed the stroller.”
The room went dead silent.
Adrian stared at Clara.
“What?”
Clara’s eyes widened.
“No. No, sir. I didn’t.”
“I saw her!” Vanessa screamed. “She pushed Emma toward the stairs!”
Clara jumped to her feet.
“That’s a lie!”
Adrian checked Emma’s head, arms, legs.
“Is she hurt?”
“I caught her before the stroller went all the way down,” Clara said breathlessly. “I was trying to save—”
“Don’t touch her!”
Adrian shoved Clara’s hand away.
“Sir, please listen to me.”
“You pushed my daughter?”
“No!”
“You almost killed my child?”
“I WOULD NEVER HURT HER!”
Vanessa covered her mouth, crying harder.
“She’s lying, Adrian.”
Something inside Adrian snapped.
He turned and slapped Clara across the face.
The sound cracked through the living room.
Clara froze.
Emma screamed louder.
Adrian’s twelve-year-old daughter, Olivia, appeared at the top of the staircase.
“Dad!”
Clara slowly touched her cheek.
Her eyes filled with tears.
But she didn’t scream.
She didn’t fight back.
She just looked at Adrian like he had broken something inside her.
“I was saving her,” Clara whispered.
Adrian pointed at the front door.
“Get out of my house.”
“Dad, stop!” Olivia yelled.
“Olivia, go upstairs.”
“No!”
“Now!”
Olivia came running down instead.
“Dad, you’re wrong.”
Adrian barely looked at her.
“Stay out of this.”
“I can’t.”
Vanessa stiffened.
Olivia held up her phone.
Her hands were shaking.
“I recorded it.”
Adrian finally turned.
“What?”
“The hallway. I was making a video for school when it happened.”
Vanessa suddenly stopped crying.
For half a second, pure fear flashed across her face.
Olivia looked straight at her father.
“Dad… you need to see what Vanessa really did.”
